World Cup at the Club

We will be showing all of the World Cup games at the club. We'll be making a special effort for a couple of the England games.

On Sunday 24 June, England play Panama at 1pm, shortly after most of the Sunday morning golfers will finish their rounds. There is no competition on that day so we will hold a £5-in swindle in the morning. Please stick around afterwards to watch the game, have a couple of drinks, and enjoy one of Grant's hearty lunches.

On Thursday 28 June, England play Belgium in their final group game, which may or may not prove crucial. The game kicks off at 7pm and we will hold a 9-hole swindle beforehand for those who can get up there early (from about 4:30 to 5pm). Even if you can't make it for the golf, please come up to watch the football. Once again there will be plenty of food and drink available.

For those of you who prefer Rugby, we'll be showing the England v South Africa game this coming Saturday (9 June) in the clubhouse. The game kicks off at 4:05pm.

Club Championship - Winner

Congratulations to Matt Brookbanks, who won the Club Championship with two 5 over par rounds of 73. Matt's 36 hole total of 146 gave him a comfortable nine shot victory over nearest challengers Peter Mason and Nick Sharp (both 155). Matt's first round score was particularly impressive as he had a sextuple bogey 9 on the 5th hole. He followed this with three straight birdies to quickly get him back on track!

The Silver Jubilee, awarded to the player with the best 36 hole net score, was won by Greg van Vuuren. Greg's net 36 hole total of 133 including a superb net 59 in the second round - an impressive score any week but particularly so on Club Championship day. Tommy Tighe came second, also scoring a net 133 but losing out on countback. Jeff Sands finished third.

There was some consolation for Tommy Tighe, as he emerged triumphant in the Gordon Coombs Trophy, awarded to the 10+ handicapper with the best 36 hole gross score. Tommy's 36 hole total of 161 earned him a two shot victory over Gordon Hay (163), with Fazil Rafice in third place (165). It's Tommy's fourth victory in the Gordon Coombs, and his first since 2004.

Well done to all of our winners, and to all 40 entrants who played 36 holes and helped to make it a great day. A special mention for Don David, our oldest entrant, who once again played both rounds and returned a score.
