Silver Challenge Cup
We took part in the annual Silver Challenge Cup match at Royal Wimbledon on 3 November. The match was first played between London Scottish and Royal Wimbledon in 1895 and took place most years until 1961, when there began a 40 year hiatus. The match was reinstated in 2002 and has been played annually since, with the venue rotating between the two clubs. Each team is made up of 10 players competing in singles matches and the result is determined by the aggregate score over all matches. Each match is played to an end, regardless of the scoring to that point. Thus, a player who is 5 down with 4 to play could win the last 4 holes and only lose by 1 hole in the overall scoring.
Royal Wimbledon utilised their home advantage and recorded a comfortable victory by an aggregate of 21 holes over the 10 matches. Well done to David Paul, who claimed our sole victory, and to Tommy Tighe and Gordon Hay, who had creditable halves. Thanks to all the players who turned out for the club and helped to make it an enjoyable day, despite the result.
